Move from WooCommerce to Shopify and keep WordPress

You can move a WooCommerce store to Shopify and keep the WordPress site you have built. The content stays where it is. The cart, checkout and the commerce plugins leave WordPress, Shopify runs them, and RedeemID shows the Shopify catalog on your pages and signs customers in with their Shopify account.

RedeemID doesn’t move products, orders or customers. Shopify’s own import tools, or a migration app from the Shopify App Store, do that. This page is the order of work around them.

1. Move the store into Shopify

  1. Import products, customers and, if you want them, past orders into Shopify with its import tools. Keep each product’s handle the same as its WooCommerce slug where you can, so its URL can carry over.
  2. Rebuild in Shopify what WooCommerce extensions did: shipping, taxes, discounts, and subscriptions through a subscription app.
  3. If customers bought access to anything on your site, tag them in Shopify. A customer CSV import can set tags, or use Shopify Flow on purchase from now on.
  4. Publish the products to the sales channel of RedeemID’s Storefront token, usually Headless. See Connect Shopify.

2. Put RedeemID where the shop was

  1. Install and set up RedeemID: Install, Connect Shopify, Configuration.
  2. Replace WooCommerce’s product, category and cart blocks or shortcodes with Shopify Product, Shopify Collection, Shopify Cart and Shopify Cart Link. See Products, collections and the cart.
  3. RedeemID serves product, collection and cart pages at /products/{handle}/, /collections/{handle}/ and /cart/ by default. You can set other paths in RedeemID → Settings → Storefront pages.
  4. Replace the My account page with the Member Account block and a Shopify Log In button. Order history, addresses and payment methods now live in the customer’s Shopify account.

3. Redirect the old shop URLs

WooCommerce’s default paths differ from RedeemID’s, so add redirects with your redirect plugin or web server before you deactivate WooCommerce:

WooCommerce path Redirect to
/product/{slug}/ /products/{handle}/
/product-category/{slug}/ /collections/{handle}/
/shop/ your shop page, or a collection
/my-account/ your account page

/cart/ is the same path in both. If you changed WooCommerce’s permalink bases, use yours. Check a few products by hand: a redirect to a handle Shopify doesn’t have is a 404.

4. Switch over

  1. Deactivate WooCommerce and its commerce plugins, then save Settings → Permalinks once.
  2. Customers sign in with their Shopify account. WooCommerce customers are already WordPress users, so when Shopify’s verified email matches, RedeemID asks them whether to link the two; their posts, comments and other WordPress data stay with them. See Member accounts.
  3. Gate members-only content with levels and rules, if you sell access. See Access levels and Paywall rules.

Limits

  • RedeemID moves nothing. Products, orders, customers and reviews go through Shopify’s import tools or an app.
  • Passwords don’t carry over, and aren’t needed. Shopify signs customers in itself, usually with a one-time code sent to their email.
  • Emails must match to link. A customer whose Shopify email differs from their WordPress email gets a separate WordPress user until the two match.
  • Subscriptions don’t move by themselves. Payment methods saved with WooCommerce’s payment gateway stay with that gateway, so subscribers start again in Shopify, usually at their next renewal.
  • RedeemID reads Shopify only. Nothing in it works while the store is still on WooCommerce.

RedeemID is still being built

RedeemID is a WordPress plugin that lets customers sign in with their Shopify account and opens your site to what that account holds. It is in early development, so parts of this site are unfinished and details will change.

It is coming soon. We are looking for sponsors and for the first stores and publishers to use it.
